Legal Secretarial Course Options
Pitman Training offer a choice of Certificates and Diplomas for the legal
secretary, dependent on your level of skills and secretarial
experience.
Short Courses are available as stand-alone qualifications,
however they are complementary so can be combined to provide ideal
qualifications for a career in law.
The Pitman
Legal Secretarial Diploma is for those starting out and
will provide the total secretarial and IT skills package required
together with an introduction to various aspects of the law.
The
ILEX Legal Secretarial Certificate and Diploma both focus
exclusively on developing the in-depth knowledge and skill to produce
legal specialist documentation. For these you will need a level of
secretarial experience and good IT skills. You can combine the two –
taking the Pitman Diploma to get you up to the correct skills level
before you move on to ILEX.

the gaps and advise which course options and levels would be needed to
reach your goal.

Pitman Legal Secretarial Diploma
This
qualification is ideal if you are starting out in the secretarial
field and wish to focus on legal secretarial as your career. It covers
all the basic secretarial and IT skills that you will need, as well as
a choice of specialist modules focusing on different types of legal
expertise. If you do not have good typing, audio and IT skills this is
where you would start. We recommend that you complete the Pitman Legal
Secretarial Diploma first or complete individual Pitman course modules
in those skills that you specifically lack.
There are no pre-requisites other than an interest in a legal
secretarial career.
The course covers:
Typing and audio typing skills
A total package of Microsoft Office skills needed – Word, Excel and Access
A choice of modules on specialist aspects of the law including Company Law, Civil Litigation, Conveyancing or Criminal Law
The course
is studied on a flexible self-paced method at the Pitman Training
Centre, with access to a Training Adviser for personal support. It is
modular with assignment based exams at the end of each module.
Certificates are given on successful completion of each module,
culminating in your Diploma when you have successfully completed the

The
Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX)
The Institute
of Legal Executives courses are run in conjunction with City &
Guilds. Pitman Training, London, offers both Level 2 Legal Secretary
Certificate and Level 3 Legal Secretary Diploma qualifications. These
stand as qualifications in their own right or can be complementary to
our own national Legal Secretarial Diploma. These courses offer
skills/knowledge development if you wish to become a Legal Secretary
or to start the process of becoming a Paralegal or a Solicitor –
they do not cover any IT training as typing and IT skills are
prerequisite to doing the course, however a Pitman Training Diploma or
individual Pitman IT modules will support you through any skills gaps
prior to doing your ILEX.

Level 2:

year full time – based on 15 hours per week
How
the ILEX courses are structured:
- There are two mandatory modules in each of the ILEX courses – Legal Word Processing, and Working/Business Skills in the Legal Environment.
- There is also a third optional module – Legal Information Processing.
- Results are measured on both coursework and assignments which are completed at the end of each module.
- All coursework and assignments must be done on a pc and are marked by our Internal Verifier.
In addition to these
assignments, a 45 minute proof-reading test must be passed before
the full qualification can be awarded. These are held three times
a year on dates set by City & Guilds. You can sit these in the
Pitman Training Centre and they are sent to ILEX for marking.
This
is the best training course I have ever undertaken and definitely
recommend it. It covers everything the “would be” legal
secretary needs to know to obtain a high level legal role and it is
also challenging enough for all those who are already a legal
secretary and who are looking to build on the knowledge and
experience they already have. The support and advice given at
the training centre is first class. With this Diploma on your C.V. the
sky is the limit on what you could achieve as a legal secretary.
